Maluku Selatan or the Republic of South Maluku was a proposed breakaway state from the Republic of Indonesia in the 1950s and was unrecognized by the United Nations. The chief bone of contention between the South Maluku Rebels and presidentSukarno of Indonesia was on the question of federalism. The secessionist movement was active between 1950 and 1963. Following rebel leader Chris Soumukil's capture in 1966, the Maluku Selatan exile government has been headquartered in the Netherlands.
