On May 1, 1840, Great Britain became the first country in the world to issue an adhesive postage stamp - the now legendary Penny Black. The actual idea for the stamp came from an ex-schoolteacher, Sir Rowland Hill - a simple suggestion of "a bit of paper just large enough to bear the stamp and covered at the back with a glutinous wash which the user might, by applying a little moisture, attach to the back of the letter". 

This formed just part of a series of sweeping reforms that were to revolutionize Britain's and indeed the world's postal service beyond all recognition. His reforms meant that the sender, rather than the recipient, now paid the postage and this was indicated by the value of the postage stamp. Today, examples of this prestigious stamp can fetch upto £50,000 at auction, something that has made it the jewel in the crown of many philatelist's collections.

This superb Coin First Day Cover features £1 Miniature Sheet from the Isle of Man Post Office and a Crown coin from the Isle of Man Treasury.

The coin has a unique 'Pearl Black' finish which enhances the contrast of the frosted relief with the diamond polished mirror finished background.

It is appropriate to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the penny Black - the first adhesive postage stamp - at the international exhibition Stamp World '90 in London, the city where it all began.

Philately as known to the modern world is recognised from 1864 under the name which was derived from the Greek; true philately today encompasses many branches and many specialties.

The significance to collectors of the first adhesive postage stamp (or label as it was first called) is, however, without parallel and the Isle of Man Post office is proud to offer its contribution to the commemoration of this important philatelic event, with this unique "Pearl Black" UNC coin, developed by the Pobjoy Mint.

Struck in Cup-Ni, Crown size 38.60mm. GRADE: UNC, and encapsulated in a First Day Cover, issued by the Isle of Man Post Office & The Pobjoy Mint. 40692.
