Iceland -
" PRESERVE THE POLAR REGIONS & GLACIERS."
MNH ~ Miniature Sheet !
In January 2009, Iceland issued a miniature sheet as part of the joint stamp series 'Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers'.
The stamps are printed with thermochromic ink. This sheet shows the current position of the amount of ice in the Polar Regions under normal temperature.
When the stamp is heated, the ice melts away and shows the position of the amount of ice in the Polar Regions in the year 2100.
Cold state of the stamp shows the amount of ice and snow in the North-Pole in the year of 2009.
Hot state of the stamp shows the estimated amount of ice and snow in the North-Pole in the year of 2100.
Preserving Glaciers and Polar Regions
Iceland, Finland and Chile have along with many other countries decided to issue a joint stamp where the theme is the preservation of glaciers and polar regions.
There is a danger that increasing temperature on earth due to the greenhouse effect will greatly endanger glaciers and polar regions and constrict the livelihoods of those living close to these regions.
The ecosystems of the arctic countries are sensitive to climate changes. It is forecasted that average temperature on earth will increase by 2°-5°C in the next 50-100 years.
However, climate warming up to 10°C in air temperature is expected in the polar regions.
Year: 2009.
