Like jewels in the jungle, parrots have fascinated people for centuries with their extreme beauty and intelligence. In the West they have been favourite pets since Spanish and Portuguese explorers brought specimens home from South America in the early 1500's- the Machiguenga Indians of the Peruvian rainforest have been keeping macaws as pets for generations.

The skill of most members of the parrot family Psittacidae is to accurately mimic sounds from their surroundings, particularly the human voice, and it is this skill which has made them sought after in the West, and which has led to their decline in the wild.
