The 175th Anniversary of the Penny Black

The Penny Black was the world's first adhesive postage stamp. It prepaid postage up to half an ounce in weight to anywhere in the United Kingdom. Introduced as part of Rowland Hill's sweeping postal reforms, it became valid for postage on 6 May 1840.

Conceived, designed, engraved, printed and distributed in just five months, it remains one of the most beautiful stamps ever produced.
