This Splendid Coin Cover features 2 coins recovered from an actual shipwreck & 5 exciting stamps issued by the Royal Mail to mark the 300th anniversary of the first Eddystone lighthouse...
Featured on the 63p stamp is the Eddystone Lighthouse itself, pictured as it looked when first lit in 1698. Even with Lighthouses, ships are still in grave danger.
The cover's splendid cachet depicts the ship, "Admiral Gardner" which sank on the Goodwin Sands in 1809.
From the wreck of this ship come the 2 East India Company coins encapsulated on the cover. Among the first-ever coins to be struck on a steam-driven press, the coins were minted in Birmingham, England.
The tarnished coin was exposed to the corrosive effects of sea water, while its 'brother' remains undamaged, having sunk while being still encased in a barrel of protective wax.
Postmarked 'Plymouth' on the stamps, First Day of Issue - 24th March 1998 - this highly desirable and intriguing Coin Cover is one of an Edition limit of just 1,500.
