Details of the BANKNOTE
A most historic and artistic banknote from the Third Reich, issued between 1940 and 1945 while WW2 raged. This bill was specifically intended to circulate in the Occupied Territories which encompassed most of Europe at the height of German aggression. The note has two swastikas along the bottom, one embossed.
Poignant portrait of a woman wearing a headscarf who appears to be familiar the hardships of war. The reverse shows the town of Marienburg fomerly part of East Prussa at the tripoint of Germany Danzig and Poland. The Nazis expelled or murdered its Polish occupants declaring it German and installing a Focke-Wulfe Aircraft plant there. After fierce fighting it fell to the Red Army in 1945.
In 1996, 178 corpses were found in a mass grave in Malbork; another 123 were found in 2005. In October 2008, during excavations for the foundation of a new hotel in Malbork, a mass grave was found containing the remains of 2,116 people, a majority of whom were female which makes the bill's portrait all the more remarkable.. All the dead were said to have been German residents of pre-1945 Marienburg, but they could not be individually identified.
The war which has raged across Europe for almost 6 years is quickly coming to an end. Germany is slowly being squeezed between the pincers of the advancing Soviet Red Army, the U.S. First Army and the endless waves of aerial bombardment by allied bombers. History was being made and written daily. It was a massive period of change and upheaval. Mobile banking arms of the Third Reich issued currency in the field to its troops via the Reichskreditkassen (Reich Credit Offices) to ensure an ongoing currency supply for its people in newly occupied areas. This banknote was one such from this period and bears two field stamps on the reverse for the 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend or "Hitler Youth" as well as 25th SS Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS Hunyadi. A fantastic example here and beautifully preserved in approximately Extra Fine condition. Very light creasing and light discoloration on right hand border. -
